Description

Going through some old files I found these pictures that I drew a few years back depicting famous personages from Ancient Rome’s early history, so I thought I’d post them on here.

APPIUS CLAUDIUS CAECUS (THE BLIND)

Appius Claudius was a Roman senator who, as censor, was responsible for the construction of Rome’s first aqueduct and the first major Roman road, which was named in his honour as the Appian Way.

In later life he went blind, according to his enemies this was due to a curse.

During the war against King Pyrrhus of Epirus, Appius Claudius gave a speech declaring the Rome would never surrender. This is the first known political speech in Latin, and is the source of the saying “every man is the architect of his own fortune”.
